Colin Quinn packed 'em in and delivered a fantastic hour plus set at the Lakeshore Theater last weekend. Colin talks fast and delivers joke after joke with such rapidity that I couldn't hear everything he said over the laughter. I loved his stuff about Brad Pitt traveling the world in designer duds, with a tired, stunned look on his face, and so many multi-national kids under his arms he can't keep them straight.
Ditto with Colin's hilarious take on the Popeye cartoons we saw as a kid and how twisted it was to see Olive Oyl being molested by Brutus while Popeye stood back admiring his own muscles. I love Irish comedians and their humor. There is something very similar to the manic, neurotic flavor of it that reminds me of Jewish humor and the desire to laugh at every subject, especially the social and political - in order to shed a little light on the dark places.
In 1987 Colin started a three-year stint as the Co-Host of MTV's popular game show "Remote Control." At the end of that show's run he hosted his own MTV show, "Colin Quinn's Manly World", a sports/comedy show. While also at MTV he wrote and starred in the comedy short "Going Back to Brooklyn" with Ben Stiller. In addition to his television work, Colin has also appeared in movies, including “Who's the Man?”, “Married to the Mob”, “A Night at the Roxbury” and most recently, “Comedian”.
On September 30, 1995, Colin was hired as a writer and feature player on NBC's sketch/comedy show, "Saturday Night Live." September 1997 he became a full-time cast member, showing up on “Weekend Update” as 'Lenny the Lion' and 'Joe Blow'. He also established the recurring characters 'The Thank you Guy' and himself in the skit “Colin Quinn Explains the NY Times”. Colin Quinn's most recent work was on Comedy Central called "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" - an "in-your-face" discussion forum held with other stand-up comedians.
After the show, I got to see him hilariously in action again as he flirted with two cute, young blondes outside the theater, who recognized him from TV but had not seen his act. His deadpan delivery sent one joke after another straight over their heads like a Concorde taking off over baggage handlers. It was as well delivered as his act! Be sure to catch Colin Quinn next time at The Lakeshore Theater when he returns in about six months. That's my story and I’m sticking to it!
