The Snow Queen

Written by

The Snow QueenThe Snow Queen is a lovely Holiday production that tells the story of two childhood sweethearts- Gerda and Kai, who grow up in love together but are separated for a time as they grow into adulthood by the lonely and powerful Snow Queen. This production really reminds me of the old Chicago theatre days with its minimalist, modern and sparing production but which packs a lot of punch. The entire ensemble cast sings beautifully with many of the characters playing their own instruments as well.

The Snow Queen, and the Snow Queen as a kindly old woman, are portrayed by three puppeteers in seven-foot high puppets, which gave a great sense of magic, fun and fantasy to the show.

The real standouts vocally had to be in the mature talents of Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Barbara Barrow, Linda M. Smith and Kat Eggleston. Barbara Barrows’ ballsy and bluesy rendition of “Robber Girl” really got the crowd going. The hysterical “Love Letter on a Fish” performed by Kat – was also a real crowd pleaser. Also guitarist Michael Smith who played and sang “The Rose Bush Song” was very funny and gifted at both the guitar and in the light humor of “ The Wooden Soldiers”.

If you haven’t seen a show at the new Victory Gardens space, you really should put it on your New Years’ to do list because the new space is very beautiful and cozy and has great acoustics as well. It is located in what used to be the historic Biograph Theatre on Lincoln Avenue where Dillinger was shot and where I once served popcorn during my theatre school days at DePaul! The Snow Queen will be running from December 1st through January 7th and is good quality fun suitable for the entire family.
