A quick history lesson: Anne Bonny and Mary Read are two of history’s most famous female pirates. Both women disguised themselves as men and sailed under the command of Captain Calico Jack Rackham, where they became part of the same crew. There has long been speculation that they may have had a romantic relationship, though there is no widely accepted historical evidence to support it.

That essentially sums up the history covered by yo ho., SMJ’s original play which reimagines Anne and Mary’s story in a very queer, very explicit way. Described as “equal parts historical fantasy and introspective sexual and gender exploration,” the production has far more interest in the latter than the former. It uses these historical figures less as a subject to interrogate than as a launching point for a silly, raunchy, gay pirate adventure.

This is not inherently a bad thing – director JD Caudill’s production is clearly committed to creating both queer joy and comedic sexual exploration on stage, and for queer artists to come together to make something. yo ho. may not be as historically based or polished as it markets itself to be, but with accurate marketing, there is definitely an audience to love the show.

The cast is the heart of the production. The outrageous script makes room for the entire cast to throw themselves into spicy, raunchy, hilarious, and sometimes sacrilegious moments for multiple characters, whether that be ensemble playing multiple roles or one character with two alter egos. Two particular standouts were William Delforge (Chad/James) and Brittani Yawn (Vanessa) – both cast members carried the production, playing multiple roles with great comedic timing and execution, and larger-than-life physical comedy. Funny on their own, Delforge and Yawn only became more powerful when playing off of each other.

(L to R) Rachel Sleek Bañuelos and Sierra Bryn in the world premiere of yo ho.

This constant-humor approach does limit the nuance of character relationships that can be developed; however, it does not mean that the show was void of emotionally moving moments. Rachel Sleek-Banuelos’ eleventh-hour monologue is stunningly moving; despite the moment feeling a bit out of place in the script overall, Banuelos temporarily silences the theatre and lands it perfectly regardless. However, in the end, the play’s ending unfortunately does lean into a gimmick that feels more abrupt than satisfying.

For a company called Babes with Blades, though, the clearest strength is exactly where it should be: the fighting. The stage combat is consistently impressive, but the swordplay in particular is fast, dynamic, and genuinely intimidating from only a few feet away. Even when the choreography is visibly choreographed, it never becomes mechanical. Carly “CB” Carson’s fight choreography has momentum and danger, nearly intimidating to be sitting mere feet from.

The technical production also feels surprisingly considered for the polish of the show. The set creates a convincing pirate-world atmosphere within The Edge’s black-box space, though some scene changes feel more complicated than the material requires. In general, yo ho. can feel disproportionately unserious compared with its technical ambition: the energy is closer to an enthusiastic college-theater production than the fully realized historical fantasy its marketing material promises.

Still, there is an audience for this show. The theatregoer who wants a messy, high-energy night of queer pirate smut – perhaps with friends after a nearby Edgewater happy hour – may have a genuinely great time. For everyone else, yo ho. is best approached with the understanding that it is not a sweeping historical drama, but an overwhelmingly unserious fantasy which features strong sword fighting and a few flashes of something more.

yo ho. is running Thursdays through Sundays at The Edge Off-Broadway through August 29th. Tickets are available at BabesWithBlades.org

Iceboy! Sets New Goodman Box Office Record

Today, Goodman Theatre achieves a new milestone in its 100th anniversary season: Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins announce that Iceboy! or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write "The Iceman Cometh" starring Emmy Award winners Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss, has become the theater's all-time best-selling production. Running at 99% capacity, Iceboy! has welcomed more than 53,000 audience members from across the nation and 23 countries—breaking previous top attendance records held by War Paint (52,851 in 2016) and The Who's Tommy (50,980 in 2023)—with two weeks remaining in its three-time extended run. This success joins that of the downtown debut of Raven Theatre's Octet (extended through August 2) and the improv stand TJ & Dave (tonight, July 31, August 1)—both of which have gone clean. In addition, free outdoor performances of the family-friendly The Lizard y El Sol have drawn record crowds—more than 1,200 people—during the first week of its 12-park tour with destinations from Ashburn Park to Norwood Park, prompting a four-performance extension at Chicago Public Libraries (Little Italy, Uptown, Altgeld Gardens and McKinley Park). The Goodman's productions of Dennis Watkins' The Magic Parlour and David Byrne and Mala Gaonkar's Theater of the Mind continue extended runs. For tickets and more information about each offering, visit GoodmanTheatre.org.

"This week alone, The Goodman will serve 13,000 Chicagoans with programs in neighborhoods all over the city. This is The Goodman at 100, meeting audiences in this moment, and we could not be more proud," said John Collins, Executive Director. "By design, the goal of this Centennial Season—expertly curated by Susan Booth and executed by our world-class Artistic, Education and Engagement, Production and Administrative teams—was to push past what was previously thought possible in order to serve more audiences, in more neighborhoods with more programs than ever before. As we look to begin 'our second century' this fall, we hope to build on this success achieved together with our audiences and supporters."

Iceboy! or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write "The Iceman Cometh," appears in the 856-seat Albert Theatre through August 16. For tickets ($74 - $259, subject to change) call 312.443.3800 (12 noon- 5pm) or purchase online at GoodmanTheatre.org/Iceboy. Looking for tickets to a sold-out performance? A limited number of $75 stand-by tickets are available for purchase on the day of performance (by telephone only). Additionally, a limited number of $20 tickets are offered through a daily lottery; visit TodayTix.com/Iceboy for details. The Goodman is grateful for the support of its Iceboy! sponsors: Edgerton Foundation (New Play Award), Mayer Brown (Lead Corporate Sponsor) and Athletico (The Official Physical Therapy Provider for Goodman Theatre).

In Iceboy!, Broadway's brightest star of 1939, Vera Vimm (Megan Mullally), is at the top of her game. But when she adopts a 40,000-year-old Neanderthal discovered frozen in the Arctic, the spotlight begins to shift. As Iceboy (Grey Henson) thaws, he unexpectedly becomes a theatrical sensation, inspiring the "father of the American drama" Eugene O'Neill (Nick Offerman) and challenging Vera for center stage. A "highly original, frothy nightcap to a Centennial Season of successful productions, and a nice way to kick off The Goodman's next act" (Newcity), Iceboy! features music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss—the Tony Award-winning creators behind Urinetown (Hollmann, with Greg Kotis) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Reiss, with Rachel Sheinkin and William Finn). Marc Bruni directs and JoAnn M. Hunter choreographs. The cast also includes Cedric Yarbrough (Comedy Central's Reno 911!), Tony Award nominee Sarah Stiles (Broadway's Tootsie) and Alex Goodrich (Marriott Theatre's Hero: The Musical), together with Donterrio (Nightbirds), Melanie Brezill (A Christmas Carol), Will Koski (Paramount Theatre's Into the Woods), Linda Mugleston (Broadway's The Music Man), Shawn Pfautsch (The Matchbox Magic Flute), Andrea San Miguel (The Penelopiad), Will Lidke (Theo Ubique's Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Leah Morrow (Marriott Theatre's Heartbreak Hotel) and Jeff Parker (Betrayal).

ABOUT THE GOODMAN

Since 1925, The Goodman has been more than a stage. A theatrical home for artists and a gathering space for community, it's where stories come to life—bold in artistry and rich in history, deeply rooted in the city it serves.

Led by Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins, The Goodman sparks conversation, connection and change through new plays, reimagined classics and large-scale musicals. With distinctions including nearly 200 world or American premieres, two Pulitzer Prizes, 22 Tony Awards and nearly 200 Joseph Jefferson Awards, The Goodman is proud to be the first theater to produce all 10 plays of August Wilson's "American Century Cycle." In addition, the theater frequently serves as a production partner—with national and international companies to Chicago's Off-Loop theaters—to help amplify theatrical voices.

But The Goodman believes a more empathetic, more connected Chicago is created one story at a time, and counts as its greatest legacy the community it's built. Generation-spanning productions and programs offer theater for a lifetime; from Theater for the Very Young (plays designed for ages 0-5) to the long-running annual A Christmas Carol, which has introduced new generations to theater over five decades, The Goodman is committed to being an asset for all of Chicago. Education and Engagement programs led by Clifford Director of Education and Engagement Jared Bellot and housed in the Alice Rapoport Center use the tools of theater to spark imagination, reflection and belonging. Each year, these programs reach thousands of people (85% from underserved communities) as well as educators, artists and lifelong learners across the city.

The Goodman stands on the unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—and acknowledges the many other Nations for whom this land now called Chicago has long been home, including the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo, and Mascouten. The Goodman is proud to partner with the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum (Gichigamiin-Museum.org) and the Center for Native Futures (CenterForNativeFutures.org)—organizations devoted to honoring Indigenous stories, preserving cultural memory, and deepening public understanding.

The Goodman was founded by William O. Goodman and his family to honor the memory of Kenneth Sawyer Goodman—a visionary playwright whose bold ideas helped shape Chicago's early cultural renaissance. That spirit of creativity and generosity endures today. In 2000, through the commitment of Mr. Goodman's descendants—Albert Ivar Goodman and his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton—The Goodman opened the doors to its current home in the heart of the Loop.

Marsha Cruzan is Chair of the Goodman Theatre Board of Trustees; Diane Landgren is Women's Board President; and Kelli Garcia is president of the Scenemakers Board for Young Professionals.

“I have seen Oh, Mary! three times and relished the beauty of this show—how different people shine so brightly in these roles, and yet you see the influence of Cole all over the production. The opportunity to get a crack at Mary Todd Lincoln is beyond a dream come true,” said J. Harrison Ghee. “We all possess so much within us. If we surrender to circumstances, we will find the possibility for expansion beyond belief. We are going to set the road on fire with this electrifyingly hilarious play.”

Written by Tony and Olivier Award winner Cole Escola and directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, Oh, Mary! opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, and continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre, where it became the first show in the theatre’s 121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week.

Oh, Mary! has since broken its own box office record thirteen times and became the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment. Oh, Mary! opened to rave reviews in London’s West End on December 18, 2025, and won the 2026 Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play.

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

The full creative team includes dots (Scenic Designer), Holly Pierson (Costume Designer), Cha See (Lighting Designer), Daniel Kluger (Sound Design and Original Music), Drew Levy (Sound Designer), Leah J. Loukas (Wig Designer), Addison Heeren (Props Supervision), and David Dabbon (Musical Arrangements). Casting by Henry Russell Bergstein, CSA.

Oh, Mary! is produced by Kevin McCollum & Lucas McMahon and Mike Lavoie & Carlee Briglia with Bob Boyett, The Council, Jean Doumanian Productions, Nicole Eisenberg, Jay Marcus & George Strus, Irony Point, Richard Batchelder/Bradley Reynolds, Tyler Mount/Tommy Doyle, Nelson & Tao, Palomares Miller & Rosenberg, and ShowTown Productions.

Metropolis Performing Arts Centre’s new staging of The Wizard of Oz sends audiences down the yellow brick road with a production that balances classic nostalgia with a warm, community centered spirit. Before the story unfolds, it’s worth remembering the legacy behind it: L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel first introduced readers to Dorothy and the fantastical land of Oz, but it was the landmark 1939 MGM film that transformed the tale into a cultural touchstone. Judy Garland’s performance, the Technicolor world, and the Oscar winning score cemented the story’s place in American imagination. The film’s success inspired decades of stage adaptations, culminating in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1987 musical version by John Kane, which became the foundation for most modern theatrical productions, including Metropolis’ interpretation.

Under Tor Campbell’s direction and choreography, the familiar tale unfolds with clear narrative focus: Dorothy Gale’s unexpected journey from Kansas to the magical land of Oz, where she meets the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion and joins them on a quest to reach the Emerald City and seek help from the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. Along the way, the group navigates enchanted forests, poppy fields, and the looming threat of the Wicked Witch, discovering courage, heart, and the strength of friendship as their path winds toward home.

This stage version also introduces several comedic moments you won’t find in the classic film, a choice that gives the production a fresh, playful spirit. Campbell sprinkles in light audience interaction, small winks to the crowd, and character specific jokes that open up the world of Oz in ways only live theatre can. These additions never undermine the story’s sincerity; instead, they create a sense of shared fun between the performers and the audience, reminding viewers that Oz is not just magical - it’s delightfully unpredictable when experienced onstage.

While the larger roles across the cast are played with skill and presence, three performers emerge as the evening’s defining performances: Nora Wragg’s Dorothy, Jake Elkins’ Cowardly Lion, and Genevieve Thiers’s Wicked Witch. Wragg stands at the heart of the evening, offering a Dorothy shaped by sincerity, emotional clarity, and a vocal warmth and control that give her songs an effortless lift. Her speaking voice is particularly striking, at times uncannily reminiscent of Judy Garland, deepening the role’s authenticity without ever tipping into imitation. Elkins bursts onto the stage with bold humor and irresistible personality, turning the Cowardly Lion into a crowd-pleasing force of nature. Thiers brings commanding theatrical bite to the Wicked Witch, leaning into the character’s menace with sharp timing, confident presence, and seasoned comedic instincts that add a delicious flair to her villainy.

Around them, Gabriel Fries provides steady, grounded work in his dual roles as the Wizard and Professor Marvel, shifting between Marvel’s warmth and the Wizard’s bluster with ease. David Omari’s Tin Man adds soft vulnerability that complements the ensemble, and Corey Barlow, stepping in for Nolan F. Robinson II as the Scarecrow in the performance I saw, brings relaxed, playful movement and an easy charm that keeps the character loose-limbed throughout. Adding to the production’s appeal is Caliban Marie Spence, a real-life little dog who plays Toto and becomes an instant audience favorite with every appearance, a lovely touch of authenticity that heightens the show’s sense of wonder. Caliban was trained for the role by Danielle Spence, who is delightful onstage as Glinda the Good Witch, exuding kindness, confidence, and the gentle assurance that everything will be all right. Together, these performances guide the audience through Oz with warmth, personality, and a touch of real magic.

Two of the strongest forces pulling Dorothy toward home are the deep bond she shares with her dog Toto - whom she feels is her only true companion on the lonely Kansas farm and is threatened with being destroyed by the stern, vindictive neighbor Miss Gulch, who later appears in Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West - and the steadfast love of her hardworking Aunt Em, who has stepped into the role left vacant by Dorothy’s late mother. The Wizard of Oz is also one of the few films of its era to make a four‑legged companion feel like a true co‑star, and it’s always striking to me how naturally the actors work with Toto and how deeply he’s woven into Dorothy’s emotional world. In many ways, the entire story is set in motion because of him: Dorothy finding her inner self by rescuing Toto.

Metropolis’ use of a lightly trained dog reinforces that bond beautifully, grounding the story in something real and tender. Seeing an actual dog onstage makes the audience instantly understand Dorothy’s desperation to protect him from Miss Gulch’s threat, and her fierce devotion to Toto remains a surprisingly radical idea for a story of its time. He’s the companion who saved her from loneliness, and her determination to keep him safe becomes the catalyst for her entire journey - willing to leave everything she knows behind if it means preserving the friendship, love, and life of her dog.

As of 2026, animal abuse - especially toward domesticated dogs and cats - remains a heartbreaking problem around the world. That’s part of why stories like The Wizard of Oz still matter: they show a young person treating her pet with genuine love, loyalty, and protection, reminding audiences how powerful and important that bond can be.

Shifting back to the company, Metropolis Performing Arts Centre’s Youth Ensemble brings the Munchkins to life with fun energy and crisp character work- along with other roles played, enriching every scene they step into. Their musical numbers sparkle with bright, unified group vocals, and their choreography is impressively sharp, full of buoyant movement and clean formations that give Munchkinland its joyful pulse.

The production’s technical storytelling reaches an early high point with the tornado sequence, staged with impressive clarity and imagination. Dancers swirl across the stage, waving billowing grey scrims that evoke churning storm clouds, while Forrest Gregor’s sound design layers convincing wind roars, rattling impacts, and atmospheric rumble. Tony Churchill’s projection design adds spiraling debris and sweeping gusts that intensify the chaos, culminating in a striking moment when Alyssa Mohn’s scenic design reveals Dorothy’s house splitting cleanly in half. Once Dorothy lands in Oz, the creative team transforms the stage from plain Kansas farmland into a magical, richly colored world through Sierra Walker’s strategic lighting, Churchill’s dynamic projections, and Theresa Ham’s vivid, whimsical costumes. The projections also allow both the Wizard and the Wicked Witch to appear larger than life, giving their scenes an added theatrical punch that heightens the story’s sense of wonder.

All of this visual ingenuity supports the larger emotional themes at the center of Metropolis’ interpretation. As director Tor Campbell notes, “At its heart, The Wizard of Oz is not about a destination. It is about resilience,” and “After every storm comes the possibility of a rainbow,” a pair of reflections that beautifully frame the production’s spirit and its enduring message.

Danielle Spence as Glinda and Nora Wragg as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre.

One of the joys of this production is hearing the show’s classic songs delivered with such affection. Metropolis keeps all the musical touchstones that audiences expect, from the sweeping simplicity of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (beautifully sung by Wragg) to the buoyant charm of “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” “If I Only Had a Heart,” and “If I Only Had the Nerve.” The familiar melodies land with an easy warmth, and Sharon Mason’s music direction ensures each number feels both lovingly preserved and freshly energized. Whether you grew up with the film or are discovering Oz for the first time, the score remains one of the production’s most delightful anchors, offering moments of nostalgia, humor, and pure musical joy.

This staging taps into the broad, welcoming appeal that has kept The Wizard of Oz alive for generations, offering a family friendly experience that works just as well for first‑timers as it does for lifelong fans. Young audiences get the magic, color, and adventure, while adults appreciate the faithful storytelling, classic score, and standout character work. With its beloved characters, recognizable songs, and heartfelt performances, Metropolis’ production celebrates courage, companionship, and the reminder that home is never as far away as it seems. Most of all, it rekindles that unmistakable childhood wonder the story has carried for decades, letting audiences feel like kids again as they’re swept up in bright colors, familiar melodies, and the simple joy of watching Dorothy and her friends discover who they are. It’s the kind of show where adults smile at memories they haven’t visited in years and younger audiences fall in love with Oz for the first time, a blend of fun, heart, and theatrical playfulness that sends you out of the theatre lighter than you walked in.

What also stands out in revisiting The Wizard of Oz is how much strength Baum gave his female characters, especially considering the story’s early 20th century origins. Dorothy may be young, but she drives the narrative through her choices, her compassion, and her determination to return home. Glinda’s calm authority and the Wicked Witch’s fierce, commanding presence form a striking contrast - two powerful women shaping the world of Oz in very different ways. Even within a fantasy framework, there’s symbolic weight in that dynamic: Dorothy’s journey becomes a quiet assertion of agency, resilience, and moral clarity at a time when female protagonists were rarely allowed such depth. Metropolis’ production highlights that legacy, reminding audiences that beneath the magic and spectacle lies a story where women hold the narrative’s heart, its danger, and its wisdom.

Audience logistics at Metropolis are refreshingly convenient. A free, multi-level parking garage sits just around the corner, making arrival and departure remarkably easy, and the surrounding streets offer a wide range of restaurants only steps from the theatre for pre- or post-show dining. Inside, the venue’s cozy seating creates an intimate viewing experience, and while the concessions stand offers a fine assortment of drinks, snack options are extremely limited. Patrons may want to bring their own munchies for intermission, though outside food is prohibited inside the theatre, making a quick bite before or after the show the most practical choice.

With the practicalities so thoughtfully handled, what remains is the simple joy of being swept into a world where imagination leads the way. In the end, this Wizard of Oz proves that the road to Emerald City is still paved with imagination, heart, and just enough whimsy to make you believe in magic all over again.
