Review: 'The Magic Flute' at Goodman Theatre

Mozart’s masterpiece, and one of the world’s most frequently performed operas, The Magic Flute, is given a modern-day makeover in award-winning director and writer Mary Zimmerman’s production of The Matchbox Magic Flute, now playing at The Goodman Theatre on its Owen stage.

In this world-premiere production, Zimmerman has adapted the traditionally lavish and grandiose opera with full company and orchestra and has created what has been dubbed an opera-in-miniature with a cast of ten and an orchestra of five. The results are nothing less than triumphant.

From the orchestra members dressed in costume with candles flanking their music stands to the delightful Spirit (wonderfully performed by Reese Parish) who guides us through the performance, to the Zimmerman-trademarked scenery which effortlessly flows from forest to palace and back again, every detail contributes to the overall ambiance of the production to create an intimate theatre experience. The audience feels as if they are part of the performance as the actors frequently turn to us and bring us into the action and let us in on the jokes.

The production follows the traditional story line of Prince Tamino (Billy Rude) who finds himself lost in the forest pursued by a dragon. He is rescued by three woodland ladies, who show him the portrait of Princess Pamina (Marlene Fernandez), the daughter of the Queen of the Night (Emily Rohm), who has been abducted by Sarastro (Keanon Kyles) and his sidekick, Monostatos (Russell Mernagh).

The Prince falls in love with the Princess instantly, and when the Queen of the Night commissions him to rescue her daughter, promising him her daughter’s hand in marriage, the Prince is only too happy to oblige. Aided by a magic flute and accompanied by the lovelorn half-bird, half-man, Papageno (brilliantly played by Shawn Pfautsch), the Prince commences his magical mission.

In adapting this classic opera, Zimmerman has gone line by line, not only condensing the plotline to fit a two-hour running time, but also updating the libretto to include unexpected and humorous references to modern life. For instance, when the three woodland ladies (Lauren Molina, Monica West, and Tina Munoz Pandya) discover the unconscious Prince, they coo over his physique as one who has obviously gone to the gym.

Later when Papageno and the Princess meet and sing about “the bird and the girl,” they encourage one another to persevere and not be discouraged “as when you are waiting in the grocery line.” These references are so cleverly embedded throughout the performance that you find yourself waiting and listening for them.

Even though only one of the ten cast members is a trained opera singer (Kyles who plays Sarastro), all have the musical theatre credentials to do justice to Mozart’s soaring operatic scores. Rohm as Queen of the Night gives an outstanding performance of one of the opera’s most well-known arias, Der Hölle Rache, with its fast repetition of High C’s, that challenges most sopranos. And the superbly comedic duet of Pfautsh’s Papageno and his newfound love, Papagena (also played by Lauren Molina), Pa pa pa, is a show-stopper. Also, not to be missed is Kyles’ impressive baritone, whose lower range wows the audience.

Rude as Prince Tamino and Fernandez as Princess Pamina shine in their respective roles, both vocally and in their character portrayal. Fernandez has a particularly beautiful soprano that is magnificent to hear. The three woodland ladies (Molina, West, and Pandya) are outstanding in their roles, adding humorous commentary on the action to both those on stage and to the audience. Mernagh’s Monostatos, as the one real villain in the story, is played with just the right comedic touch in his clumsy attempts to seduce the Princess.

What ensues is a thoroughly engaging and entertaining production that is fast-paced and lively. Toss in a few woodland creatures, whose dancing border on the hilarious as they throw in a little soft shoe, and you have a family-friendly show perfect for all ages. Even some of the musicians get involved and join the action on stage, as when flautist Dalia Chin, leads the Prince and Princess through their final trials with her “magic flute.”

Zimmerman herself sums up the production as a fantastical, adventuresome journey with something for everyone – dancing animals, magical instruments, lessons learned, along with a bit of humor, all set to Mozart’s time-honored classic score. What’s not to like?

Don’t miss your chance to introduce the younger generations – or even yourself -- to opera in a most winsome and captivating way. The Matchbox Magic Flute is playing through March 24 at the Goodman Theatre.

On the Run with Marriott's Madagascar

Charming, colorful and inventive, the Marriot Theater’s Madagascar – A Musical Adventure, for young audiences, is a fun-filled ride with themes that will surely resonate with both kids and adults.

Based on the popular 2005 film by DreamWorks Animation, Madagascar centers around four main characters from the Central Park Zoo: Alex the Lion (Russell Mernagh), Marty the Zebra (James Earl Jones II), Melman the Giraffe (Stephen Schellhardt), and Gloria the Hippo (Rashada Dawan).

At first glance this fun-loving group seems happy enough to perform for park visitors, especially the king of the jungle, Alex the Lion, who is in his element prancing around the stage, showing off his perfected “roar”. But when presented with the idea of freedom by a cadre of hilarious and enterprising penguins who say “it’s not natural to be in a zoo,” Marty the Zebra, to the surprise of his friends, makes a run for it.

Having lived their entire lives in captivity, Alex, Melman and Gloria are shocked that Marty would even consider leaving the comfortable life of the Central Park Zoo. But in the spirit of true friendship, they push their misgivings aside and embark on a rip-roaring adventure that eventually lands them in the exotic wilds of Madagascar.

The quirky and pompous lemur King Julien (wonderfully played by Jonathan Butler-Duplessis) is a joy to watch as he tries to incorporate Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria, in his masterplan to rid the island of the fossa who hunt and attack his fellow lemurs. However, this plan goes awry as Alex, who now has to fend for himself in the wild, can’t contain his animal instincts and attacks Marty.

Directed and choreographed by Matt Raftery, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure, hits all the right notes in “crack-a-lackin’” style as Mernagh and Jones also shine in their roles with both chemistry and good-natured fun, as they show that in the end true friendship can overcome even the “laws of nature”.

Perhaps of the best moment of the production is the high-energy rendition of “Move It, Move It!” which gets the crowd clapping and kids, as well as adults, up on their feet.

Colorful costume and props really enhance the performance, bringing this animated favorite vividly to life. “Madagascar is already an established idea,” said Jesus Perez, costume designer and assistant director, “but since this is a live production and not a movie, it has opened up a world of creativity for us. This is the perfect vehicle for me as a designer to bring this fantastical world to life.”

The talented cast, which also includes: Leah Morrow as “Skipper,” Liam Quealy as “Kowalski,” Laura Savage as “Mort and Private,” Elena Romanowski as “Rico,” Samantha Pauly as “Maurice,” and Jed Feder as “Mason,” won’t disappoint as they sing and dance to some of your favorite tunes from the movie.

All performances are followed by a question and answer session with the cast.

Madagascar – A Musical Adventure, playing at the Marriott Theater located in the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, runs through April 15 Tuesdays through Sundays at 10 a.m. with certain performances at 12:30 p.m. For more information and tickets, visit www.marriotttheatre.com.

As stories go, Mamma Mia! is a light, simple love story injected with plenty of humor and song – nothing heavy in the least, rather an evening island getaway where the sounds of ABBA reign supreme. It is the story of Sophie Sheridan and her mother Donna, who have made home on a Greek Island where they own and run a small resort. But the story really begins when Sophie, unsure of who her real father is, invites three possibilities to her wedding based on information she’s uncovered in her mother’s journal. Of course, Donna has no clue until the three men show up at the island – awkward! With several people vacationing at the island in anticipation of Sophie’s wedding to Sky in a few days, multiple love narratives unfold - and how couldn’t they? After all, you have a handful of romantically starved individuals thrust together in close proximity to each other on a tropical island that oozes amorousness, coupled with the fact that they all seem to lose control to ABBA classics, which come aplenty.

Marriott Theatre takes on Mamma Mia! as their latest production, uniquely staging the energy-filled production in the round, giving the audience the feeling that they too are guests at the island resort as the action is up close and the aisles are frequently used during the performance. Set designer Scott Davis does a fantastic job creating an island atmosphere throughout the theatre. Strategic alterations are made to convert the musical to the round, including scenic touches like the moat of illuminated water that surrounds the stage and the walls behind theatre goers that are converted into those of a Greek taverna complete with the colorful shutters of French-styled windows. Adding the finishing touches to the Mamma Mia! setting are dazzling costume designs by Theresa Ham and lighting effects by Jesse Klug.

Danni Smith takes on the leading role of Donna Sheridan, the short-haired brunette replacing the prototypical long-haired, wavy-blonde we are used to seeing in this production. The change is nice. Smith, who was last seen at Marriott Theatre in Man of La Mancha, serves up a powerhouse vocal performance, especially during her crowd stunner “The Winner Takes It All” and her heartfelt rendition of “Slipping Through My Fingers”, delivered with just the right touch of care and concern a mother would have for her daughter. Capturing the essence of Donna so well, we immediately like her and cheer for her. Putting it bluntly, Danni Smith is truly extraordinary. Meghan Murphy and Cassie Slater are rightly cast as Donna’s two lifelong friends Tanya and Rosie. The casting couldn’t have been more perfect. As many times as I have seen Mamma Mia!, I have never seen a more believable friendship than that as between Donna and her besties in this production, which is so convincing you’d think it true in real life. Murphy gets to show off her great sense of comedic timing as Tanya, also taking it to the house vocally, hitting one way out of the park in the racy number “Does Your Mother Know”.

Taking on yet another challenging vocal role in the show, this one of Sophie, is Tiffany Tatreau, who handles it with apparent ease. Tatreau, undoubtedly gifted in the vocal department, tackles several demanding songs on her own and adds on many occasions to the captivating vocal harmonies that make this musical so special.

Sophie’s three possible fathers are also cast well, Peter Saide getting plenty of chances to display his own finessed vocal skill as Sam Carmichael, while Karl Hamilton and Derek Hasenstab draw some big laughs as Donna’s other two ex’s Harry Brightwell and Bill Austin. Russell Mernagh makes his own mark as Sky, Sophie’s soon to be husband. Mernaugh, whose beach bum charm is nothing short of convincing, puts forth a well-rounded performance that makes him a solid choice for the role. Overall, the cast is just sensational from top to bottom, getting strong support from its incredible ensemble who wows the audience on several occasions with big-time dance and vocal routines.

All the elements are in place to provide an entertaining evening without even the slightest lull. The stage is often taken over by energetic dance numbers that will have you tapping along or beautifully arranged ballads that will move your soul. The humor is abundant, the subject matter light and the visuals so easily take your mind elsewhere - somewhere dreamy. Yes, the table is perfectly set to enjoy a night of ABBA hits done with much originality from “Dancing Queen” to “Waterloo”. Fun is "the name of the game" in this wild ride stringed together by a compilation of the Swedish sensation's biggest hits - so much fun in fact, that you might have to pull out your glitzy, bell-bottomed, spandex one-piece (we all have one, don't we?) after getting home from the show.

Mamma Mia!, already a winning show, has now become even more of a special experience as it is put together so well, and uniquely, by Marriott Theatre in a way that cannot be seen anywhere else. When you put it all together – the great music, the talented performances and a setting that takes you miles and miles away to a tropical bliss – it all adds up to “Having the time of your life”.

Highly recommended.

Mamma Mia! has already been extended and is being performed at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire through April 16th. For more show information, click here.
